    Default Forward looking sonar

Does anyone have this type of sonar that will tell you whats up ahead of you while you are going 40 mph and over. I've seen these on the web and they are very expensive. I would like to know is anyone in this forum have or know about this sonar ?Thumbs Up

I've thought about that one too. You can bet those sly devils at HB an Low are working feverishly on that and the first one out will again revolutionize sonar imaging. The transducer / unit will have to have some means of scanning, either mechanically, electromechanically, or electronically the beam and/or the return signal at very high speed to build the image. The motion of the boat won't work heading into the target. That would be kind of like a stationary view with current SI, just a smudgy mess. It would work more like radar but using a transducer. That would mean clear images while stationary whether you're sitting on a boat or sitting on a boat dock.
They want everyone to load up their boats with two SI units first and then come out with front imaging so we all would have to upgrade.:-)

I was thinking about this today. I'm more biased toward Humminbird myself just to get that out there. But if say something does come out for front looking sonar. As in a addon. Which company would be in a better position to implement it. Would humminbird make an addon which use's the new networking? To me Lowrance would be in a better position to add on with a device like the SS1.

There are two companies that make these units, But the price is way to much for me (thousands of dollars) So far they have been used in whaling boats to search for whales. But I just found that out. A guy I know said he had one on his Procraft,he was probably just yanking , let him tell it he has everything on that boat. Found out that when I asked him to tell me how he set up his menu he said "oh all my stuff is automatic I don't need to set anything up. So I told him That I got to get one of those units, that reads your mind and can see what you see. Thanks guys for reading this tread I thought that It was something out there I missed since technology keeps getting better.

I'd think Lowrance would have the advantage, since their sister company, Simrad, already makes a forward looking sonar.

My guess is that it's not a likely product. Planing hull boats wouldn't accomodate a transducer that has to stick down in the water like a forward-looking sonar does. Most of those transducers are limited to around 25-30mph.
