I take my foot pedal apart and give it a good cleaning periodically. Take the covers off and just wash the base and circuit with warm soapy water. The dirt and grit is what wears these boards out. Don't forget, the switches are just plastic bubbles with circuit trace contacts making contact. Grit will wear it out.
Dirty. Look at the little magnet on the slide area on the pcb. This is what controls the speed. This magnet pushes down on the plastic and acts like the center tap of a potentiometer as it slides up and down the track.
I found that the magnet had separated.
Clean with soap, water and an old soft tooth brush.
Wash off with warm water. Hang out with the laundry on the line for drying.
