Understanding sonar beam shapes

Let's play with some picture diagrams of different sonar beam shapes..

This may help some understand the differences in the various beam selections....

Remember that just because the outside line of the beam in the "cartoon" shows the beam stopping at a certain point in the water...the sonar doesn't just go to that line and stop...it kinda feathers out onward past the line some... ....the actual outside lines in the "cartoons" are more like the best effective shape of the beam...

This is Quad Beam...



This is the Dual Beam...



This is the 455 SI/DI beam...



These are the shapes of the 455 vs the 800 SI/DI beams....(2d beams 200 and 83 are also shown in the center directly under the boat ....
