Trolling motor pull rope

Anyone ever had a problem changing out these things. I have a Motor Guide and it is going to be a pain in order to change this thing. I just wondered if anyone has any tricks to it.

I had to replace mine last spring on my Motor Guide. It looked almost impossible until I decided to drill a hole in the channel the rope goes through that allowed me to get a screwdriver shaft into and then it was easy to manipulate the old rope out and the new rope in. Remove any pins and snap rings to allow you to get the other arm of the assembly out of your way, drill the hole where it will allow you to work with the rope and you're there. Just drill the hole relatively close to the springloaded pin that the rope disengages so you can access that part of it to wrap the new rope back around the pin. It's easy once you see what you need to do.

They are a pain. Attaching a piece of soft wire to the end will help feed it through.

you could try splicing or taping the new rope to the old one and pull the new thru the opening,similar to pulling wire

The problem is that you need to secure the new rope to the springloaded pin and tie a knot. That is where the new hole comes into play. I imagine thay have some specialized tool at the factory to do this with that we don't have at home.

I had the same trouble. But then I took a small S hook tied the rope in one end, crimped it over and then put the other end on the spring loaded thingy and crimped it over, job finished. Was the easiest and most inventive thing I have figured out in a while.

F.A...now that is a good idea! How did you get access to the s hook to crimp it? On my tm the pin is in a full box channel several inches from the closest end....the only way for me to get any access was to drill a hole in the aluminum channel big enough for a rope knot to be forced through.

I guess all trolling motors are different. I was able to get to mine with needle nose pliers. My channel is not completely enclosed.
