    Default HB 997 Update question - 4.750 to 4.950

    Greg or Joby,

I have a 997c with the 4.750 update running currently. Is there anything major on the 4.950 ipdate (ie: solves the GPS donut issue, etc...) or should I just stay where I am? Also wanted to ask if there was another update coming for the 997 soon anyway, in case it would be better to wait. I have no problems with it right now and don't have anything connected to it via interlink if that matters.

    Thanks!

    RttG,
I would certainly consider installing the 4.950 software update as it contains many improvements. Here are the software release notes:

“6/10/2010 12:00:00 AM - v4.950 Adds Down Imaging. Adds LakeMaster compatibility. Adds GPS improvements. Adds new 2D sonar color palettes. Adds New SI sonar color palettes. Improves trolling motor noise rejection. Fixes Track offset issue. Changes Depth Alarm Setting to be maintained in memory upon Power Off. Supports new NVB maps w/o Canada data. (NVB models only) Automatically restores defaults when reprogramming unit. Adds additional AIS message support. Fixes Disabled GPS output. Fixes Snapshots not displaying in POS mode. Fixes Navionics library drawing when no map is available. Fixes various cosmetic and minor operational defects. Switchfire was made available in a previous release. It is automatically included in this update.”

There should be a new version of software coming up for the 997 units but I do not know when. Typically we release software updates in Winter-Spring with the units currently in production first followed by non-current units after them. So it could be a little while before we see the 997 update.

    Hey Grease...

    Go here...Login...

Download a copy of your 4.750 software to a dedicated SD card....keep it next to your unit so that if you have trouble with the 4.950 download you can reinstall the older 4.750 software back onto your unit....

I keep 5 dedicated SD cards with my unit at all times....

Copy of previous version of software
Copy of present version of software
    Copy of all my waypoints
Saved recordings of previous fishing trips
    Blank SD for today's recordings

SD cards are cheap...as compared to the headaches of needing anything listed above and not having it on hand...

DON"T FORGET...."Restore Factory Defaults" before AND after any software update...!!!

Thanks guys, that is great advice rnvinc.

HB Greg, I already have DI & Switchfire from the 4.750 update, I have the 4.950 update loaded on an SD card already and looked at that description of the update but I didn't want to risk a potential problem unless there was something major on the 4.950, mainly the donut thingy, is that what "GPS improvements" is describing?

I hate to keep harping on the donut but it is really the only big prolem I have with the unit, it is also currently keeping me from purchasing another HB unit to add to my bow. I want to do that and take advantage of Interlink but I've got to have a GPS that works at slow speeds on the bow.

    RttG,
No, the “GPS improvements” don’t get rid of the donut. Not sure what they actually did.
