I have a 997 on the console of my JVX18CC Carolina Skiff and am in the process of installing an 858 on the bow. I have a Riptide ST TM and plan to run the transducer cable up the shaft groove. Pulling power and Interlink cables from the forward deck to the center console is the only other challenge I see.
I thought when using the SI that the boat had to be moving at least four mph. If so, it would be virtually useless on the trolling motor.
one stump, it works going slower. i dont think it works sitting directly over the top of a brush pile, but thats why i was thinking about a 858 which isnt SI/DI. but i just pulled the trigger on a really good deal for a 798, so now i need to figure out if i want that on my bow or on my console and have the 997 up there for the bigger screen
oh and the cheaper price made my wife really happy so win/win
Si sonar does work while sitting still but it will not produce the same images you are used to seeing. If you are parked over a brush pile you will get the constant sonar return of the brush pile with the only changes being from fish as they move in and out of the Si sonar beam. A guy in Australia has posted some really good images of Barramundi and Bull Sharks he captured while anchored down, on another web site.
