Is there any opinion about black and white vs color for the DI of both Low, and HB? I've always used the color palette so I can't really say. I won't own a unit without GPS though, so the plain jane without any recording capability just wouldn't be a choice for me. I think DI without recording, and GPS would be a handicap for most people. For those who have only used old 2d units, this would be a heck of an upgrade.

    Your right about needing GPS.

I have a 898si on the back of my boat, just want something with more detail for the front to use on the trolling motor. My 898 has the gps and navionics maps that I can use to mark structure with.

So you'll be limited to marking waypoints with the 898, and then having no way to use them when you are on the trolling motor. This will be a PITA, trust me. Spend a little extra dough, buy a better, networkable finder with GPS for the front, and hook them up. This will save you so much time, and make your life a lot easier, and make you more effective on the water.

Technology has become a huge part of fishing, and will continue on. Having these tools at our disposal can be a difference maker especially for tournament fisherman. Every day fisherman will see the benefits also. GPS is probably my favorite tool. Having routes on lakes full of timber is piece of mind. With down scan and side scan, being able to mark and go to structure that you have marked is priceless. Being able to get a clear picture of what's below the boat, instead of 2d blobs, is fantastic.

Not saying that you can't go out and catch fish without it, but I bet I'm more productive and safer on the water with it.
