the same way, with size being the only real difference?

I'm going to purchase one. I've been researching them. I figured I would ask the "pros" before I buy one. I never have used a fishfinder. I've been looking at the down imaging and Side imaging.

they look real good on dvd. they also look to me to operate the same way, unless i'm missing something. which a distinct possibility.

There are some differences between the 798 and the 998, beyond screen size. For example, the 798 can use only 455 kHz sonar for SI and DI; the 998 can use user-selectable 455 (longer range) and 800 kHz (better resolution) sonar. Also, the 3-way split screens are different on the 798 and the 998 (same info is displayed, but in different locations).

Screen size, however, is a major difference. The 798 will work, but you'll see much more detail on a larger size screen. If the leap to the 998 is too much to handle, consider the 898 which gives you a larger screen and 455/800 kHz sonar for ~ $1500.

thanks i will check your site. actually i bought both, the 998 for the transom and the 798 for the bow and i'm trying to get more familiar with them. a guy told me tonight that i might have trouble with the 798 because the transducer might not be able to side image. do you know anything about that?

There are transducers that can be connected to the 798 that will work but not provide Si sonar. An example of this is the XTM-9-20-T which is a trolling motor mounted DualBeam transducer. So what transducer got installed on the trolling motor?
