Marked my crappie beds that I put out this morning or at least I tried

to mark them didnt realize my sd card was not in the slot until I went to mark spots, did it save to the memory of my 898 or am I outta luck ? if it saved to internal memory, can I transfer to sd card ??

I am not familiar with the 898 specifically, but I would assume that your waypoints are saved to the unit. You can stick your card in later and save them to it.

The waypoints get saved to the internal memory of your Humminbird unit (any model) but Screen Snapshots and Sonar Recordings get saved to an SD card only. So if you did not have an SD card in the unit you still have the waypoints but there are no pictures saved anywhere. But since you have the waypoints you can always go back and capture a screen snapshot of the crappie beds.
