Some guys use a small lawn mower battery...

Some guys have made their own AC/DC inverter...The power supply for an Igloo 12v cooler sold at walmart will work...about $6 I think.....Be sure and install a 3 amp fuse in the + wire before hooking to your unit...

Now, if you let the unit power up by itself...it will be in POS (point of sale) mode where you can play with the settings but any changes you make will not be remembered by the unit...

If you power up in the "Simulator" mode (hit "menu" during the welcome screen)....cursor down to "Simulator"...then hit "Exit"...now you will be able to make changes to the unit and the unit will remember the changes you made....

First , you're gonna need to order a second power cable from HB for your unit....

Accessories :: Cables :: Power Cables :: Humminbird

Install a 3amp fuse in the red+ wire just as you would do hooking it to your boat battery....

Now you can hook the new power cable to a small battery and use it in the house...

    Maacchu,

If you get an extra power cable be sure that when you hook it up to your unit, you place it on just like it is when it is in the mount so that the polarity will be correct. Part of the connecter has a guide slot on it. Use it as a reference point and align it the same as it is aligned in your 898 mount. Call me if you need help.

Get your 2nd power cable from HB and post again if you have any questions....

We can guide you thru wiring up the AC/DC inverter too....really handy not having to lug around a battery...

I even take my unit to work with me sometimes to works with recordings and such....

What type of converter should I look for other than the igloo one ? I just called local wallyworld and they only had the coleman one that has a cigarette plug on the end. Just want to make sure not to fry my unit, I have ordered the power cord already and just need to find the power converter

    thanks

The Coleman is the right one...I just forgot which company walmart carried...

Then, go back in the auto accessories section and find one of these.....

Advance Auto Parts: In-Line Fuse Holder for Glass Tube Fuses by Bussmann - Part HHK

I couldn't find the in line fuse holder on the walmart website but I'm pretty sure they carry them...

Now, when you get home you're going to have to tear the cigarette plug apart and see which wire is soldered to the center post of the cigarette plug...this is the positive wire....the negative wire will be soldered to the outer metal case of the cigarette plug...

Mark the positive wire, cut off the cigarette plug and attach one end of the in line fuse holder to this positive wire coming from the inverter...

Now, you should have the Coleman inverter with 2 wires coming out of it....
Positive is the one you attached the in line fuse holder to..
    Negative is the other wire...

Now, when you receive your power cord from HB...it will have 2 wires coming out of it...
    Positive is the red wire...
    Negative is the black wire....

Attach the HB power cable wires to the Coleman inverter wires...
HB red wire to the in line fuse wire coming from the inverter
HB black wire to the other bare wire coming from the Coleman inverter...

Install a 3 amp buss fuse in the fuse holder and you should be ready to go....
