If you can hook it to the unit and rub the bottom of the transducer with your finger, you'll usually feel it kicking your finger.

does any one know how to test a transducer on the bench with a voltmeter, ect can you inject a small signal into it and see if it works right...

CatFan,
That won’t ensure that the transducer is working right. That will only ensure that the transducer is firing after it gets the transmit signal from the unit. Also, some people experience pain in their finger/hand from doing this. If your hearing is good you can usually hear the transducer firing (ticking) when the unit is turned on and the transducer is out of the water.
helpme,
Unless you have some specialized test equipment, there is no real way to check a transducer. We use purpose built equipment to test our transducers when we make them.
[PS: Take a transducer and point the bottom straight up at the ceiling. Sprinkle some salt or sugar on it and turn the unit on. Wait a bit and you should see a pattern forming. This will not prove that the transducer is working 100% but it rather neat to watch!]
I will try those things you guys suggested, its a legend 3005 deep and reads the depth at 648 ft no matter what i set it on, or how deep the water is. checked all the settings by the book. Put my finger on the bottom of the transducer but did not feel any pinging from the transducer. tried all settings from auto, bottom lock, and manual but none worked. some times it goes to simmulator mode on its own which that what it does with transducer disconected. checked cable from one end to the other and no cuts or bad places.
