Humminbird PiranhaMAX 170 speed

My boat tops out at about 27 mph (Garmin eTrax Vista) and I normally run around 20-22 mph. If all was setup OK and transducer adjusted OK how fast should I be able to read depth?

It should read at any speed if your transducer is properly installed and adjusted. Mine does.

After about 7 mph I show a gob of hollow fish (like on the wide beam) and it goes to 200 something feet deep! The fish readings are probably bubbles when I take off...? I don't know why it will not read depth.

Sounds like you are getting air under the transducer. See if you can adjust the transducer deeper in the water. Than try lowering the back end of the transducer lower by a few degrees (not much) to see if that helps. If not, you may have to look at installing the transducer in a different location. If you have a fiberglass boat you could consider mounting a transducer inside-the-hull. If you have an aluminum boat you need to install the transducer in the area that has the least turbulent water flowing off of the hull.

Thanks Greg. I just went out in the garage to look. It was set about the middle of the adjustment slots, so I lowered it. And I lowered the back end ever so slightly. I'll check it out in the morning. Should have all morning (maybe till 1 or 2) to fish before the rain hits.

It's a metal boat, Fisher 1610SS, twin to a tracker Panfish 16. It had an old Humminbird with a bad screen when I bought it about 2 months ago. I bought a new one and plugged it into the original wiring. I think it came that way from Fisher/Tracker.

Well, that didn't work. I'll have to look at moving it I guess.

Prop wash will also create the bubbles causing the reading problems.
