    Default ping speed setting question

Have been playing with the settings on my depth finder and am pretty pleased with the results. But my question is, on the finder I have there is an option for ping speed. The settings are in a percent type reading. What is the benefit in a lower or higher ping speed? I have it all the way up right now and am pleased with how the graph as a whole, along with the other settings being where they are, is reading. But not sure what any benefits in increased or decreased ping speed would be. Thanks for any info, God bless all.

This is from another forum and for a Lowrance 520C.

put your unit in shallow water mode

    1. ping speed 75
    2. noise reduction low
    3. surface clutter low
    4. color line 72-74
    5. chart speed 100
    6. sensitivity- console run on auto, but if you like run on manual, try 72-78 %

Ping rate is determined by the acoustic signal real time (distant) to underwater target. Deeper water requires more time to target while shallow water requires less time.

If you have 2 sonars operating at the same transmit frequency, you can change the ping rates so to offset same signal interference.

I meant to also stated that it ain't this simple. I am having the "darvon effect", which is similar to the Doppler effect.

so shallow water slower ping speed/rate is good?? and deeper water faster/higher rate will be better?? also its a feature to where you can set 2 diff finders at diff speeds to keep them from goofing each other up???

I am running an eagle fish elite 480 so there is no color setting, but the other settings you have lister are how mine are set, other than I have the ping speed at 100 %.

this unit I have now will be moved to the trolling motor next spring and a better color/gps unit will be put in its place. been reading up as much as I can on finders and trying to educate myself on it all before I go plop down 600, 700, or more even if I can save enough for SI or xd unit.....thanks for the input canepole & stevej......have a great one all, God bless...

    shallow faster. deeper slower.

yes, changing ping rates can stop same frequency interference.
