I had to download mine from HB website. You have to sign up and register your unit and they will download the proper files to update yours. I have 2 and they are different models and the files are a little different for each.

Sounds like it depends on the age of the unit you are getting. Maybe just wait until it arrives, hook it up, and check for the software version. As with any electronics that take updates, it's a good idea to compare your version with the current version.
Depends on date of manufacture. If build prior to the release of Down Imaging it will not have the software to enable Down Imaging feature - thinking it was mid-January 2010 when the Down Imaging Software was released. I always recommend updating to the latest software as soon as you get the unit so you have the most current software. Units that are produced and sit at the distributors or retailer for extended peroid of time before they are released will not have the latest and greatest software. The most current software is used on the date they are manufactured but they can be months prior when the unit is actually retailed.
This Video Clip should help with Updating Software:
YouTube - Humminbird Software Update Tips & Tricks
With Humminbird all previous software versions are compiled in the latest software so you only need the latest version and it will update all previous other versions at the same time.

After you get a unit and update the software, how often should you reupdate it? Periodically or just when you hear there is an update available?
Maachuu,
Like Doug said: it will depend on when the 798c Si unit was actually produced.
We started installing the 4.780 version software, which gave the 798 Down Imaging, into the 798 units we produced just after the first of he year. So if your unit was produced after that it should have the Down Imaging sonar feature in it. If not, you will have to perform a software update for your unit to get it.
Blairarnold,
I would make a point of checking for a new software update monthly if it is a current model unit and less so if it is a model from last year or another previous year. If you are on this or other fishing boards though you may just reply on hearing about a new software update for your unit as we try to announce them (which reminds me that I need to check for updates for my units…).
