Default Motorguide Wireless 55 TM Blowing fuse

    Hey,

Just wondering if any body else has had a problem with this TM blowing a fuse. I was running crank baits Sat when the boat just slowed down and TM wouldn't respond. Ended up being a 40 amp inline fuse. I saw that MGuide recommends a 50 amp breaker. Any suggestions?? My boat originally came with a fuse link right at battery but just wanted to see if others have experienced this problem and how they may have fixed.

I installed this 50 amp breaker for my 55# MG wireless and it was the best thing I ever did!
    Cabela's -- Ranger Style 50-amp Circuit Breaker

Flip the breaker off at the end of every fishing day and your battery life will be greatly extended. It will also prevent accidental start ups that could burn out your control module (brain) on your motor.

I had a problem with my Minn Kota ( I know different brand) and I found that I had drained my batteries down and the current flow to the motor had HEATED up the wires, where they were twisted under the cap before they go down the shaft to the motor. The insulation was totally melted and the red and black were fused together and the copper wires were in contact with each other.

I would look into this possibility before trying any fuses.

Thanks guys for the help. The 50 amp flip switch breaker looks like a good idea to me. Appreciate the help!

If it's blowing 40a fuses you have a short somewhere.

I have been told the circuit board may be going but this is the only time it ever blew a fuse. After replacing fuse it ran just fine. Not sure but still under warranty til April. Gonna watch it close until then.

Fuse for the wire ampacity not the motor. That what fuses are for.

Many reasons a fuse will blow. As the battery power drops and voltage drops, the motor slows down and draws a little more current. Fishing line on the prop, the motor slows down and draws a little more current.

As Cane Pole said, fuses are sized for the wire.

TM fuses are a special case, because they have to be big enough to handle the surge currents of the motor, the wire has to be upsized to handle the fuse.

If you go with 6 gauge wire, you can handle any TM made and an appropriate fuse or breaker.
