    Unhappy HB software mishap

Well I got my new 798c SI and was trying to update both my 727 and the 798 to the newest versions. The 798 uploaded fine, but during the upload on the 727 is froze. I tried a couple of things, but to no avail. Now I have a unit that the HB pc software won't recognize and it won't stay turned on. I think it hasn't got any software in it now that it froze up during the update download. Any suggestions or is it off to the factory?

Default Humminbird SI forums can help.

I posted my dilemna and got a couple replies. One was how to correct my issue using "bootstrap" mode. It worked! I am now the proud owner of a resurrected 727 w/ 4.760 software!:D

    Ok..

Be careful using the serial cable for updates. It can lock your unit up. I know!!!

HB doesn't recommend it even though it is in the book. I remember a couple of years back when I was fussing at Greg and Joby about it....I am sure they remember too..Had to send the unit in for fix......

Maybe HB fixed this problem and keeping it secret.

I guess when thing go bad, you can try desperate fixes.

I copied this link just in case.

    Way to go Doodler.

By the way, a bootstrap program is a program that starts a program in programming. For you less fortunates.:p

We don’t recommend using the PC Connect cables for those units that have an SD card. Several reasons for that:
    - For those units that have an SD card slot many will already have an SD card.
    - The SD card method is cheaper and many stores carry SD cards where only a few carry the PC Connect cables.
    - There are few things that can go wrong with the SD card method as there are fewer parts, connections and steps involved.
The one downside of using the SD card is that if push comes to shove; the PC Connect cables will more often allow you to use the bootstrap method to recover your unit than an SD card will.

Since the 727 has no SD card slot Yankee Doodler had no choice but to use this method to update his unit.
