This has to be the best side by side review yet that I have seen. For those of you looking at both Humminbird and Lowrance units, this should be part of your research homework.

Scanned through the thread.. Looks like a battle between a few fanbois.. I like the images that the Lowrance produces.. When I see cover in an area that should be holding fish I am going to stop and fish it.. Both of those units will do the job... Would be proud to own either one.. This will be my third year with my 1197 and it has been fail safe.. Like all tech there will always be something bigger and better in the next quarter.. Personally I give the advantage to Humminbird.. Customer service, reliability plus cost effectiveness goes unmatched.
Lowrance seems to have made some units that will render some good pictures however their prices are not in the same ball park as humminbird. You can get a 998 for around 1800 if you shop around and Lowrance's comparable unit will cost you at least $500 more. Match that with the terrible customer service everyone says they have and I dont think Humminbird has much to worry about.
Kinda like the Ford verses Chevy thing. Humminbird's side scan has been on the market for what, maybe 4 years? Lowrance didn't have it. Now I admit Lowrance's image's look better at the present. Maybe next year H/B will have something even sharper. I know I personally have, and I know many others also have had horrendous customer service problems with Lowrance. I'll stick with Humminbird till Lowrance gives me a good reason to switch.
I see Fishton is still showing the same old tree. He got one good shot of a tree on ss and he is sticking to it (his story). Still must not be able to set up his HB to take pictures to show along side the oldies but goodies by the low ss thingy. Maybe he ought to go to a hummingbird school put on by Doug. May learn something there.
Be as smart as you can, but it is always better to be wise than to be smart.
I'd say either one of 'em is great... but if you've got Humminbird,
and have a thing for having the best stuff, DON'T get in somebody else's boat
and use their Lowrance.
I've got birds now but have used 997 and HD8 + LSS, same day, same boat -
I'm scared to death of L's customer service, but if I were to upgrade
today, I'd STILL go Lowrance, I liked it that much better. My .02,
your results may vary.

With HB forcing retailers to use the MSRP, there really isn't that big of a price difference, or any at all.
J_row, he teaches classes, goes to events for HB, just the same as Doug. He seemed to be trying to put up an impartial comparison of both units.
Doug, Tmike, and some guys that sell HB units turned it into a retarded pissing contest. You're not going to get honest opinions from salesmen and Sponsored guys like doug and tmike. It ended up being a witch hunt, and caused a lot of ill feelings on both sides.
I'm glad, and confident that the same thing will not happen here with Cane Pole doing the work. He's a straight shooter that doesn't take any BS. I look forward to seeing it. I made the switch to HDS after seeing images and talking to CC.com members that have switched. The Lowrance GPS was enough by itself for me to switch. The Donut frustrated me to no end.
