Default little confused on updating HB software

I thought you were suppose to reset to factory default before updating the unit, but I have done some history reading in some old post here and have seen where it has been said to set to factory default after the software has been loaded. So what gives on the issue? Before or after or both? I have the pc cable that I got when I bought the 727, and now I have a 788ci also with the double card slots. With that being said, what is the best method to update my 788, being that I can do it either way. Thanks in advance guys. KW

    Cool

Fire it up and reset defaults. I always shut mine down and insert the card with the update and then repower the unit. When the info comes on the screen read it carfully. After it is done you should be good to go.

Then they say to also reset to factory defaults when done, but I have also read on side site that this last step was automatically included in the biggie update that gave you the Di image, but I do it anyhow. ALSOTHERE IS/WAS SOME DEBATE AS TO SHOULD YOU INSTALL UPDATE CARD BEFORE TURNING ON UNIT OR SHOULD UNIT BE ON FIRST

Go to Humminbird's website and check the FAQ's section, they have step by step instructions you can print.

I have never seen that anywhere. Why would u have to reset to default after the update when the unit is already set to default settings?

A goooooood programmer would have set the defaults at the beginning of the upgrade install if it was indeed required before installing the updates. High level language programmers (such as C) are sloppy code writers mainly because of such massive memory availability. Their code is not near as efficient as us old assembler writers.

What this (you set the default at beginning of upgrade) really does is give HB wiggle room to cover their butt because they don't want to be responsible for any mishap.

    It's the "It's your fault" syndrome.:p

The latest update for the 997 unit states that resetting defaults is now done automatically when updating, But I will still restore defaults manually before updating, just to be on the safe side. Here is what latest update includes:

    Free Download:
    997c SI Combo Update (version 4.950 - 0 bytes)
    Description:

6/10/2010 12:00:00 AM - v4.950 Adds Down Imaging. Adds LakeMaster compatibility. Adds GPS improvements. Adds new 2D sonar color palettes. Adds New SI sonar color palettes. Improves trolling motor noise rejection. Fixes Track offset issue. Changes Depth Alarm Setting to be maintained in memory upon Power Off. Supports new NVB maps w/o Canada data. (NVB models only) Automatically restores defaults when reprogramming unit. Adds additional AIS message support. Fixes Disabled GPS output. Fixes Snapshots not displaying in POS mode. Fixes Navionics library drawing when no map is available. Fixes various cosmetic and minor operational defects. Switchfire was made available in a previous release. It is automatically included in this update.
    Prerequisites:

You will need a working MMC/SD reader/writer device attached to your PC and a formatted MMC/SD card.
    Instructions:

Download to your computer and use the HumminbirdPC program to upload your unit. You may also copy the uploaded software to an MMC/SD card and then insert that card into your unit to update its code. CAUTION! We highly recommend that you restore the defaults on your Humminbird unit prior to downloading any new software as it can create complications that can only be fixed at the factory. Copy and paste this link to your browser for additional instructions.

I thought I noticed something on the screen stating such, when I installed this update a couple of weeks ago. Don't know if the other model #'s have this update though.
