The unit that I saw was worse than your image. We were in about 15 feet of water and everything past 50-60 feet was really dark.

Your image starts darkening at this range but still viewable.

I didn't notice this on the HB.

It could have been the operators. I'm not sure. I asked the owner of the Low about it and he played with the unit quite a bit trying to "see" farther out.

Like I've said before, either brand will work great. People should make their decisions based on what's important to them. I did and am satisfied with my decision.

I find that with either brand, if there is a drop in depth in the outer perimeter of the scan, you'll see darkness.

Talked with the owner of the L.

He is going to relocate his LSS transducer. Feels that it is not optimal at the current location.

He also said that he was running at 800 vs 455 during the day of our test. That may explain the dark bands past 50-60 feet.

I have and use both a Lowrance LCX-27C and a Humminbird 997C. Love both of them and each now does their job very well.

Not bashing anyone or anything but Lowrance has also had issues with software that took them 2 years to get the fix to the consumers.

My brand new 27C would lock up every time I took the boat into "shallow" water that had weeds on the bottom. Tried to call CS many times to see if I had a bad unit of if there was a bug in the software. The first umpteen times I called CS I never got off hold and gave up after about an hour each time. When I finally got through, CS had no idea what I was talking about and only told me to ship the unit to them so they could check it out and the process would take several weeks. I never sent it back but was able to monkey with the settings where the lock ups were not as long or as often. I used the 27C that way for a couple of years and longed for my old 332c that only had the problem of randomly turning itself off and on any time it wanted.

Two years and several software releases to fix other 27C bugs later, I finally saw a beta release where the shallow water lock up issue was fixed. It worked but took several more months before the final version that addressed the shallow water issue was official.

The moral of my story:

Both manufacturers have had issues with their products that take a while to fix in the past. Both will have issues in the future. Both manufacturers make great toys for us to play with and to enhance our fishing experience. Enjoy the competition and reap the rewards of the new products that will be brought to market in the future.

I Fully agree with PanMan_VA , that's why I am so GLAD to see the competition back in the si game- it will help us all.;)
