Default Questions about HB 798SI combo

I got a question about my HB.I bought it back in May after along hard thought on spending the money.Well the first one I got I installed it on the boat and was out with it asap.It worked fine for about a month or so and then got to where it just shut off on its on.So I went back traced all the wires and replaced all the connectors I used.Well that didnt help at all.So I called the company and talked to them and they said send it back so I did.To my surprise 2 days later there was another one in my drive by FEDEX delivery. So while I was putting this one on I went to the extremes again to make sure it all had fresh new connectors on it when connected to my fuse box.I set out in my garage transfering my waypoints from my hand held to it and it worked great. Then the other day I went out in the boat and fishing and to my surprise it got to shutting off again on its on like the last one did..So for the $1200 bucks I spent on it I am wondering if it is just me or the unit itself.I keep a back up with me so I plugged it in the base and it never shut off so can it be the head unit itself or is there a sensor in there to shut it off when it gets hot.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What model was the second unit that you tried that worked okay?

Was this the same unit you shipped to Humminbird to get fixed or is it a different unit?

With new connections back to the battery any sort of wiring issue would have to be with the fuse/fuse holder (or did you use a new one?), the connections to the battery itself, the battery being low enough to cause problems with the 798 but not the second unit (sounds far fetched but possible), or maybe in the power cable to unit connection. I would try very carefully spreading the pins on the power cable just a little and retrying it. If you can, test your 798 on someone else’s boat. This will show if the problem is with the 798 or something on your boat.

I would try your 798 on someone else’s boat that has a 798 (or 900 or 1100 series unit) first before calling the Humminbird Customer Resource folks again.

Not same model but I had a Wide View Yrs ago and it would do same. Shut off on it's on and I couldn't turn it back on with units power button. I'd go to consol and turn Acc. switch off/on again & then reboot unit. Mine would do this several times a day. I figured out was the wiring causing it. I replaced all wire from mount and the acc. power switch that I had it wired to and that cured it. I assume you used the new wire came with unit, so may be a prob where connect to power, in-line fuse, or whatever. Just a thought.

CT, I had the same problem when I first got my 798, panic on the boat! I went back and read the installation instructions and connected straight to the battery like it said and NO MORE PROBLEMS. Imagine that. My unit will shut off when the battery gets low. Just my .02.
