    Default Humminbird 798c SI?

I found this website a year or so back and have always enjoyed and appreciated the information that is posted. I have never had any real questions until now. I am considering buying a new depth finder and trolling motor. I am looking at the HB 798c SI. On the HB website, it does not list "Down Imaging" as available on this unit but in the Bass Pro book, it lists Down Imaging as a feature. Is Down Imaging available on the 798c SI or not??? Also, any cons on the 5" screen? As far as a trolling motor, I am looking at the Minn Kota Fourtrex. I was wondering about the Universal Sonar option: pros, cons, good, bad, performance, etc.

I appreciate the hlep and look forward to participating more on this site. Thanks.

The 798 is now Down Imaging capable. You'll just need to update the software, for free from the HB website once you register your unit.

To get SI and DI on the 798 at the bow, you'll need to rig the SI transducer on the trolling motor. The Universal Sonar transducer will only provide a traditional 2D view (200/83 kHz down-looking sonar).

The only downfall of the 5" screen is its size....I find it much easier to glean information from a larger screen, especially when it comes to identifying fish. Have you considered the larger screen 898 unit? Its price point is between the 798 and the 998. Another alternative is to try to find a clearance 997, which are running right around $1500 or less.

Limb, Jason is a gewber, but he gives good advice.

I have a 797 - the forerunner to the 798. Word to the wise, save up for a minium of the 898 or 997 on clearance. 5" screen is just not enough. Also, the 797 came with a less powerful transducer commonly referred to as the compact SI transducer. Catch is, it gives less detal than the 997 and has less screen size to display the detail available. Don't know if the 798 comes with the compact or full size ducer though.

Gewber? Just because I like fish with teeth??

The 798 comes with the compact SI transducer. The 898, 998, and 1197 come with the hi-def SI transducer.

No, not just because, but that fact ain't helping you none. I'm just saying.

There you go Limb, pass on the 798. I'd even go used on a 997 before I bought a new 798.
