Default Hummingbird Side Imaging - Down Imaging

I Am Thinking About Getting A New Boat. If I Do I Am Planning On Getting Better Electronics. I Am Thinking A 1197 Combo (do The New Units Come With Side Imaging And Down Imaging) For The Console And A 798? For The Front Interlinked? Would This Set Up Give Me Side Imaging And Down Imaging Viewing At Both Locations? Would The Gps System Be Usable From Both Locations? I Am Trying To Really Get The Best Set Up For The New Boat. Is This Over Kill? Any Info On Current Side Imaging And Down Imaging Would Be Great . Just Trying To Keep From Making A High Dollar Mistake. Thanks For Any Info In Advance.

    bigfish5,

If I were going to buy a new boat this is the way I would rig it based on your comments.

    Fiberglass Boat

1197 on the Console (Side Imaging and DownImaging on the console)
Mount the Side Imaging transducer under the jack plate and epoxy and 2D transducer (XP 9 20) in the hull for high speed readings and using a Y cable (AS SIDB Y) tie the two transducer together.
798 on the Bow Side (Imaging and DownImaging on the bow)
Interlink (Interlink the 1197 and the 798 together so you can share waypoints)

    Aluminum Boat

1197 on the Console (Side Imaging and DownImaging on the console)
Mount the Side Imaging transducer on the transom of your boat for side Imaging and high speeds.
798 on the Bow (Side Imaging and DownImaging on the bow)
Interlink (Interlink the 1197 and the 798 together so you can share waypoints)

With theses products listed above you will have Side Imaging and DownImaging on the Console and the Bow.

I see where Interlink shares the waypoints, but does it also share the SI/DI from the Tx on the transm/jackplate? Does this set up require the Tx from the 798 to be installed on the trollingmotor to see SI/DI on the 798? Will DI show at slower speeds or does it require higher speeds like SI to be clear images? Sorry to hijack your thread BF5, but I am looking at the same set up you mentioned except a 898c SI at the console and 798c SI or 858c up front

The side imaging unit are seprate sonar systems. They do not share sonar from one unit to another. DownImaging needs to be run just like Side Imaging.

Joby, thanks for your description on how you would lay out a new boat. I am still confused a bit about the front finder though. You recommend an SI unit. Most people on here seem to say that SI is useless on the front unless you are going 3-4 mph. My limited reading here, suggests that the down image feature has to use the SI to work. I am assuming you are recommending SI for the front for down imaging purposes? In practical terms, does the DI work the same ...in that you have to be moving 3-4 mph to get a good picture? This is what has me confused..... should I put SI or non SI on front.... and why.
