Default I have been a Lowrance user

since the green box but have not bought anything since I got my Eagle 480(on TM) and have not had any trouble with anything that I had to send back to CS tho I do have 2 Ultra III's that are about gone. I was thinking of getting a HDS-5X or an Eagle 640C for my TM and move the 480 to the console but after hearing of all the trouble with their CS and now Linda Colt gone I am rethinking what color unit to get. I love Garmin handheld and car GPS's but the one Garmin DF I saw in action, don't know what model, I was not impressed, may have been a low-end. With all the praise for Bird CS I am wondering which DF would be about the same as the Eagle 640C, like the crisp look of 480 X 480 of my Eagle? Know nothing about the Birds.

I would like to suggest that if you fish alot, I think you would like the HDS 5, which has the Gps in it. I said to myself when it was suggested to me by a friend, that I know the lake by heart and dont need it.Wow, was I wrong. You wont use the gps for personal navigation. I use it for following the existing river channel that is below the water and seeing things that the map will show you verses no knowing.Opened me up to a host of new spots to catch fish...Just my opinion. Will cost you like 150 bux more, but thought you may want to consider that. I too am a Lowrance guy but humminbird makes some fine units as well.

I've had several HB units and they have all been OK.

Just bought a newer boat and started from scratch on electronics. Bought an older model lowrance for the bow, but bought a HD5 for the console, and while I haven't had it on the water yet, I'm pretty pumped about the insight maps. They look pretty awesome and I already know that HB GPS doesn't hold a candle to any Lowrance product. And judging from the HB down imaging and SI photos from Lowrance, HB doesn't hold a candle to them in that category either. Haven't needed the customer service yet, but I imagine if they get enough complaints they'll figure it out. With a 2 year warranty on all the HD units, I feel a lot better about spending my money with them.

I've had a 788C and I can tell you for a fact it isn't in the same game as the HDS5.
