    Default Minn Kota speed issues

I picked up a new (to me) boat this year and it has what appears to be a fairly new Minn Kota Edge 55lb on it. Well, the 1-4 settings seem to give me the same level of thrust, which is only good for really light wind days. Once I put it on speed 5, it's really too fast. Anyone else have this problem? Is it normal for this model? Maybe I need a bigger motor. I have a 2001 16 1/2 foot aluminum Sylvan Excursion. Thanks

You should have 5 different speeds. Since you are getting something at all speeds it indicates that the speed coil is OK but the speed switch is bad. Give Tom a call here to verify my thinking. MOTOR TECH - Trolling Motor Parts, Sales, Service and Repair

Thanks for the info! I talked with Tom and apparently that's just how the Edge 55 works. 1-4 are very minor increases and 5 gets most of the power. He said the best fix is to put in a variable speed circuit board, thus changing it from an Edge to a Maxxum.

I had the same problem with my old tm. I just couldn't get the correct speed. Either I was to fast or I was to slow. I bought a used Maxxum here in the classifieds. The fellow was coming thru Knoxville so I got to see what I was buying before handing over the cash.

Had the same thing on an Edge trolling motor that I had as well. Ended up getting rid of it for a Powerdrive. By the way the powerdrive is for sale now if you are in the market!

If anyone wants one of those big switches, I got one and will just give it to you. Its been in one of my cabinets since I bought it on clearance for $5. Couldn't cost me more than a dollar or two to ship it, you can have it!
