And if you can get the person at the retailer to open the box and tell you the serial number....you can actually tell when that exact unit was built by HB....which will also tell you what should be in the box with that unit...

If the unit that the retailer is getting ready to sell you still has the 16 channel puck in the box...then that unit is older than Jan 2008... (Greg, please correct me on this also)....and that unit has probably been sitting on the retailer's shelf for nearly 2 years.....
What was the number on top of the unit that you purchased? I am looking for one also.

    Rnvinc,
I’ll have to do some research to find out when we stopped putting the GR16 in the box with the 997 units.

If those were GRHA’s at the Bass pro in Nashville than those that want them had better jump on them quick as there cannot be too many left out there!

i talked with HB today. they told me the reason for discontinuing the HA was because after testing it was no more accurate than the 50...not because low sales

    Chowan,
I would love to know the name of the person you spoke to about this. There is a difference in accuracy between the GR50 and GRHA, I’ve seen scatterplots, spreadsheet and the datasheet for the GPS engine that all show this difference. In addition, there have been a few Customers who have bought these and performed their own tests that confirmed that the GRHA is more accurate. Now to some people there may be no practical difference in accuracy – sort of like splitting hairs as the GR50 has an accuracy of 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) while the GRHA has an accuracy of less than 1 meter (3.2 feet). With a difference of 5 feet some may not see this as a difference in accuracy but I certainly do. The fact that this would cost you an extra $200 to have it (was only sold as an accessory) and the very good accuracy of the GR50 versus what most fishermen need accuracy-wise from their GPS units all resulted in a low sales volume, so it was dropped.

This accuracy difference is well worth the extra $ to me.......but I've always been accused of being a little different than some other people....

Thanks Greg...this info might be interesting to some here that are studying (like I am) about this technology and it's benefits to the fisherman....

The info of "How old is this 'brand new' unit and how long has this 'brand new' unit been sitting on the retailer's shelf"...is more of a "quirk" of my OCD mindset....(as you probably can tell by the thread I started / and continue to add to.... about 'Jumping into the Si market' )...I've picked a lot of brains...and am gratefull and value all info that I've gained from the info that thread has provided...)

When I buy a "brand new" $3000 unit, I want it to be right off the HB production line....instead of "brand new 2 years ago and sitting on the retailer's shelf since then"....

If nothing else...I feel that the HB production line expertise gained in 2 years of making and assembling the 1197's gives the 2010 models a distinct advantage over the same exact 1197's made in 2008....it's the natual order of production that doing something repeatedly over time gives exponentially improving hands on experience that makes newer units superior to older units of the same make.....

But, then again, like I said....I'm kinda OCD ......to a fault sometimes......lol...

Busy day today but I managed a few minutes of record digging and found that we started using the GR50 GPS Receivers in the 997 units in August of 2008.

The GPS Receivers are marked as the following on the top:
GR16 states: “GPS ACCESSORY SYSTEM” under the “HUMMINBIRD”
GR50 states: “AS-GR50 GPS MODULE” under the “HUMMINBIRD”
GRHA states: “AS-GRHA HIGH ACCURACY GPS” under the “HUMMINBIRD”
All of these have a dark gray (looks black to most folks) gasket between the upper and lower housings.
