Thread: New to Me Plastisol

I just got a new batch of plastisol supposed to be the clearest least amount of bubbles ect. Here is some shots of the baits first shot was what i was wanting did not reheat between the next 3 or 4 shots but each shot got more yellow like it was scorched. I have shot about 5 gallon of plastisol 3 different brands and have not had a problem unless i over cooked it i try to get it to 350F then will let it cool while i shoot. Then maybe zap it a few seconds to keep it melted but this was turning as i was shooting did the same with a clear with blue flake Cub48

You need to get some stabilizer and use a good amountin light colors. The dark colors need little to none. Do as many baits as possible with eeach reheat. Make plastic batches small to use it up as fast as possible. These tips will help you keep your color and not lose it from reheats. If you can do 5 reheats and keep your whites pure, you have done good.

Oh, and when making single color baits, you can shoot at lower temps after the first heating. First one needs to be 350. After that, 310 or 320 will work. The cooler you can shoot the longer the color will hold.

Thanks what u said was what i did. 1 cup batch did not reheat for the first 3 or 4 shots only sit my cup on a hot plate that i preheat my injector which is low heat i say 200f to 250f i used this hot plate before to heat my plastic and i turn it about half to heat my plastic i turn a little over 1/4 to warm my injector up. I have shot a lot of these white baits and have never used stabilizer. May have to now! I did the blue batch in the cup and before i finished that batch it was turning green lol. I think i may try a batch and drop the temp down to about 300f and see if the plastic is ok. I shoot a lot of white and clear with flake. May have to order some stabilizer or different brand and use this on my dark colors. Thanks Cub48

Just curious....who's plastic is it? And what strength....soft, medium or hard?

Had the same issues with Caney Creek-Do-It soft plastic. Switched to Bears and seams to be a little better. I believe Bears is Calhouns that I got last time. Heat is the enemy like CrappieFarmer says. Stabalizer makes a huge difference with white. I shoot a lot of pure white and have had a lot of yellowing at first. Had to learn new tricks every time I change plastisol brands. Sticking to Calhouns for now.

Caney Creek-Do-it Medium always heard it was the clearest and designed for microwave with less bubbles. If u look at the pic i posted i have bubbles and the blue with the bubbles turned green after i shot the first 2 molds i did not reheat until after i had shot 3 or 4 pair of molds the first shot was the color i wanted but turned yellow as i shot the next few molds. I like it with darker colors but i shoot light colors for crappie. This is not the first time i have shot lite colors last season i shot several hundred the same color as in the picture with no discolor. and no stabilizer. Cub48

I think i have the problem solved, went by and bought a digital thermometer, it goes up to 450F. It takes a little longer to check the temp but i would check the temp with my infra red thermometer was close until it got over 200F then it would go high then low. When the new thermometer got to 349F i started shooting and shot 3 batches then reheated back up to the 300F range finished shooting the others. All seemed to stay clear the feel is good and not sticky. So far i like this plastic after getting this problem solved. The bubbles are still there but not as bad i can live with them. I may change my infra red batteries i sure liked the point and shoot. Also may be the plastic maybe the how it reflects the heat waves from the infra red gun. The digital thermometer takes a little longer to adjust to the temp but is more accurate. Crappier Farmer thanks for your info Hope u have a good crop of Crappie this year !! LOL
