    Default mold mod

    well I done it
I bought the mini bug molds from lake side molds its a great mold but I felt it wasted to much plastic to shoot laminates so I got a bright idea ..... and well ...... I had the mold cut in half

here is a before pic from there site

Its a 12 cavity mold the large long sprus was a lot of waste

    here is the after pics
we made 2 - 6 cavity molds from one 12 cavity mold

we done this to two mold so now I have 4 - 6 cavity molds
the modified molds shoot great but now without as much waste and now I can stage the molds better for faster production (less hot plastic means faster cool time = less wasted time)

That was a great idea. Definitely can see you saved a good bit of waste just from eliminating the 5/8" main.

I have two of those molds but they are 20 cavity each of them don't think I'll be chop mine in half but it is a good ideal that you had least you will save on some plastic.

Are your 20 cavity molds laid out the same

I wish my molds would have been 30 cavity

If they would have cut a bait were the spur is and one across from it and cut a 5/8" port at the end of the mold it could have been a 14 cavity mold and had less waste

I agree FH. This looks like an old school layout that could use a little updating!

This is what I think it should have looked like
The only other thing is a 5/8" port 3/4" deep at the end of the spur for a 5/8" injector ( I didn't add it to the pic.)

I'm not a mold maker this is just my opinion
And lake side makes great molds and they shoot great baits and have a great design this is just the way I would like to see them

Yes I agree with you that's the way it should look Rick at Jacobs made quite a few his molds in that style less waste what is you probably know there's quite a few of the mold makers still make and old school anymore don't know why the guys don't wake up I had some from bear I didn't like for that reason is because their was so much waste the reason why I like Jacobs so much as there is no waste and you don't have to wait for the plastic baits to cool and specially with that big opening you've got a lot of hot plastic that you have to wait on usually I don't I usually tip mold over into the Pyrex cup but maybe our suggestions should be passed on to some of the mold makers with did you use to cut your molds and half and what type of tool did you bore the opening out with porthole and are you using a 5/8 cutting tool.

I had my molds cut I didn't do it
I had the guys in maintenance where I work do it for me they have machining tools and they done a great job
They even have a CNC mill but no CAM program I am a draftsman (my real job) so if they would get a CAM program it would be on
I could get some interesting things cut
    Maybe one day
