    Default Back At It

Baits running a little low so I went back to the garage today and made a couple batches of 2" baby shad stingers. I have been having problems with my laminates de laming on me for a while. My two problems that I cant seem to get past are...

    1) using dividing plate, when demolding, If the half I want to stay in the mold comes out in the process and I have to tuck the baits back in the cavity, when I shoot the second color, it warps the tails. Most of the time it curls them down and sometimes to a 90 degree curve. If the baits stay in the cavities by some miracle and are undisturbed in the cavity, then they come out perfect.

    2) to get past problem #1, I used vegetable oil on the side of the divider plate that I wanted to stay in the mold. The oil acts like a non stick agent. Problem is it also acts like a nonstick agent when You shoot the second color and the baits delam with very little pressure. jig head barb will split the bait.

So I have baits that won't stick together or baits with warped tails.

NOW, I was thinking I could shoot the baits without oil, tuck baits back in the cavities and then shoot the second color and then put the molds in a toaster oven for 10 minutes or so at 300 degrees to maybe reset the tails.

    Any opinions? thanks.CF

I am having the same problem also. I have tried everything from holding pressure to letting them cure before testing them. And they continue to separate. I'm at my wits end!

I know the feeling. I have been dealing with this now for over a year. Have not gotten it figured out yet. My dual injector is not working right and heating up two pyrex cups at the same time is a pain in the butt for me.CF

First off clean the mold and lam plate good with acetone or alcohol . Second lay your fingers across the mold on the head to hold baits in place . Remove the sprue . Can use a spatula or heavy piece of plastic . Use worm oil as a release agent if the baits keep sticking . While all this is going on your baits are cooling . Your going to have to reheat the plastic before you make the second shot on the other half . Cool set your baits when you take them from the mold by throwing them in something like a big cake pan full of water . Hang the baits up by the second shot sprue just like they lay in the mold . Give them a day or two before packaging All plastics have to cure or you will have varying problems like misshapen appendages . This should cure your problem . Also if you are getting dents in your baits keep the injector pressure on a few seconds longer and top your mold off by filling your sprue hole to over flow .

The only other thing you can do is take a heat gun and heat the half of the baits while in the mold until they are tacky. If that dosen't work beats heck out of me .

Ed all ya need is pearl white, I don't do any laminates anymore, more for the fisherman than the fish... Just ask GeneC ...he sold me on it and I've caught 1000s of specks on pearl white stingers with alittle shad scent.

And if I do laminates it's just a few for myself I just shoot one color cut with scissors put back in mold and shoot again, not perfect everytime but laminates are strong and the fish love it.

The few words about dividing plates we use them all the time and you want to make sure that the surface on the flat plate is absolutely clean I don't know why you are pulling the baits out with that plate but I've never ever ever had any problems but of course now that we have moved on to a dual injector I do not use dividing plates anymore but I did for a few years just make sure that you do not let your baits set very long after you shoot them you're wanting to shoot the second half right away whatever you do do not get any degrees or anything on the half of those bodies all say again make sure that you have the double writing plate absolutely clean I use alcohol or acetone.
