    Default walleye food

Ya, ya, ya....i know, this is a crappie board but hey sometimes a guy has to grow a little.

The walleyes have been on a non-stop tear on the Mississippi River up in this area and everyone is shouting firecracker/chartreuse tail as the so after church this morning I sat down and did some playing. Both the standard firecracker and the purple firecracker have been hot so I came up with a hybrid cross between the two colors and added the all important chartreuse tail in a standard transparent chartreuse with just a pinch of violet hi lites. I added copper glitter to the green, blue and purple instead of silver. To make it at least sort of purple I popped in some violet hi lites here too and bingo.......

Now off to heat up the lead and cast a few heads for a much needed fishing adventure this Friday. I shot about 60 of these baits, enough for my buddy and I to feed the ever present snags and still have a few left over to try and tempt some crappies later on. For now though....these are walleye fodder.

Good looking bait for sure! I think the only reason I crappie fish is because walleye are so rare here. Lol they Are a blast to catch. We get some hogs below Truman dam. A 5 pounder doesn't raise an eyebrow but as soon as there early spring run is over they disappear.

That is the Caney Creek paddle tail mold. The one Kieth designed after winning the contest.

I did some tweaking on a purple that I liked real well and came up with one that I think will replace the former favorite. I have to learn to leave things alone. lol

As soon as I finished my work in the shop I hung one of the new creations on my 1/32 jig and headed straight behind the house to the river and some practice casting. In 15 minutes of standing in the wind I scored one nice crappie. In my book one nice crappie is better than wondering if the color works, eh?

I cut back on colorant about ten drops and added some blue glitter to the plastic along with about twice as much purple glitter. Then I edged off on the violet hi lites quantity, using just a very small amount. I laid this plastic atop a nice clean chartreuse tail color with just a bit of blue hi lites in it. While this remains a crappie bait and one of my favorite summertime crappie color combinations, the Mississippi River walleyes and sauger are going to dine well on this bait too.
