    Default First try melting plastics

Heck y'all, this is my first day of fooling with melting plastic in any way. First attempt I melted some chartreuse and put it over stick on eyes and they turned out like crap. I showed Bob and G a photo of my first attempt and I believe they will tell you it was just terrible. I was more interested in trying the technique at first.

Then I melted an old clear lure I found in the truck bed. I put it in a microwave in the pyrex dish. When it was liquid I used a part of a coathanger to put the clear liquid over some stick on eyes on other plastics. Now all I have to do is get some used clear plastic and more stick on eyes to make the minnows and other baits look more realistic. If any of you have clear plastic scraps you can pm me and send them my way. Working with plastic was fun.

Actually, it was crappy. I burned myself twice by accidentally getting some hot plastic on me. I forgot to constantly stir the stuff every 45 seconds when I took it out of the microwave. I could do just one lure before it started to thicken and harden and I had to put it back in the microwave. I forgot my safety glasses and accidentally spilt a little coffee into the stuff and it spattered like the dickens, I was not wearing a long sleeve shirt and it was a mess.

This was the photo of my first attempt. Y'all have a good laugh on me.

This was my second attempt today after I found one clear grub in the bed of my truck. I've got to aquire some more clear grubs before I try this again. I think the second attempt was a little better though.

my your first attempt was successful in many different ways you are on the right track for one thing and there's nothing wrong in the way that you are putting it on I suggest when you get my clear plastic that you get the whole bait all the way down to the tail and pull it back out and let it drip off you should be getting a chuckle plastic maybe by the end of the week or the first of next week have fun Mike welcome aboard to the plastics world all this is just the beginning Mike you are going to get hooked big time now you're going to be wanting molds all that just the tip of the iceberg then comes all the other goodies that goes with it and then when you shoot your first plastics this is really going to hook you deep and then when you get your first fish on something that you made out of the plastics you're going to have UPS coming by every week from now on.

Ship, I'm with ya, this melting/dipping is harder than it looks! I just did a little of that myself recently and I'm not about to put up pics of the first few attempts, they're terrible! I think I started to get the hang of it after a few tries, but I'm certainly still a beginner:

Very much inspired by baitman, these are BG scent wiggler tails with a few layers of real light chartreuse over some eyes. Now to try and pour some decent lead to go with 'em...

That is too funny. I am on a fixed income and the wife will not let that happen. I had to go to the flea markets and thrift stores until I found a microwave that worked for the $10 I was allowed to spend. Thank you for sending some old clear grabs. I will look forwarded to playing with them next week. My burns might be healed by then. I will have to wear long sleeves, welding gloves and watch my coffee cup.

I think they look pretty good for just starting out.Thumbs Up Be careful with that hot plastic though. I imagine it could burn to the bone.
