Default Tips on putting wood in?

Ive put in Christmas trees as well as plenty of bamboo......Got that down pat now. Just seems as if the fish dont care for it as much as wood, as mentioned in another thread. What are some tips for rigging up wood brush to sink? Do you haul your own? Cut and drag from shore?(not the best option without permission lol).

I can make some boo buckets and bale em (bundle them up) and haul 5 or 6 like this
in one haul in my 16' jon boat. Hold them over the side, untie or cut the strings, pooof oopen they come, and in the water they go.

Seems like the productivity of actually getting the brush to and in the water is a little more tedious, which is fine, but in return, less piles in the water. Ive done it before, by cutting from shore and dragging out, and I could have made 3 or 4 different boo bucket holes with a couple in each, in that time.

    Hello Treed,
Long time. Here in Ohio at the lakes I fish they lower every winter from 4 to 8 ft. this exposes alot of already sunken and saturated wood and brush which I like to just gather and place as on large pile instead of being spread all around. The best part is no weight needed because of the time it has already spent in the water and the fact that there is already algae on most of it. I do try to build these piles in or close as i can so in the spring this new structure will be 5 ft or deeper.

Yep...long time is right lol...Thats a good idea. Not sure what Im going to do. Limited on time. I have to make do with what I can lol. I think Im just going to put a saw, rope, and some blocks in the boat, GPS of course, and when Im out, use whatever opportunity I can to grab something from the bank. Got a couple areas in mind near some islands and wooded railroad right of ways I might scavange. In the mean time Ill make up a couple more batches of boo. It's a fairly quick and painless process. I need to drop some in some deeper areas. Deepest Ive got is 30' right now. Most of the bait in the lake is suspended around 40' now. Ive caught fish as deep as 80fow 60'down over brush. Ill set some more on out to 45-50'. Cant hurt.

I've found (green/fresh) trees take less weight to hold down. I perfer Persimmon trees as they have dense heavy wood which sinks. Ony need a weight to hold in place mostly. They are a problem to some farmers and are easy for us to get. They have few limbs, we sometimes wire several in a bundle with wire . Lay across the boat deck add a weight(concete block) move to drop site and shove overboard. These are better and easier to fish than say Cedar or other trees with many small limbs.

Mostly we now use hardwood pallet stakebeds, most inexpensive and easiest to put out . They sure work great with fewest hang ups of any wooden structures for us.

I'd like to see how you weight pallets, Nimrod. I've been building them for about a year now and I still don't have the weights mastered.

I''ll try to explain . Put a rock in each corner ,right size to wedge in pallet between top and bottom boards. Then if it's not enough weight add some in the middle. Needs to be weighted low so pallet does'nt flip over when dropped in. I use small pieces of wood to wedge in rocks if needed as once it settles on the bottom the rocks won't fall off anyway.

I'm a big time scavanger for the fact that its readily available and i've already went through the boo stage with poor results, yesterday we found a 40' red oak that was bigger than a 5 gallon bucket at the base on the waters edge bobbing away so we hooked the boat to it and drug it to a point,it took hundreds of pounds of rocks wired to it to get to sink but the butt end of the thing is in 6' and the other end is all the way out to 17' of water........it took an hour, freezing hands and a sore back but i have a feeling that it will be worth it in short order.

I'll bet it will be worth the trouble bugman. One of my best spots is a persimmon tree that was way too big to wrestle with. One thing about a big tree is that it will be there for a long time.
