For a long time I have been trying to find cottonseed meal blocks but they are very hard to find these days. I finally decided to try a deer block and that seems to work pretty good. I also throw out cattle range cubes. During the summer I broadcast catfish food off my dock to feed the bluegills. I have shad and golden shinners all around my dock and I am sure the feeding is responsible.
I've had good success with alfalfa cubes ,cream corn and potatoe flakes cheaper the better.
I've heard lots of people using different grains...milo, oats, barley...in a simple weighted burlap sack. The burlap allows the grain to be sensed and they will eventually get through it. As said before will only work for a short time. Putting stuff like any of these mentioned out when you go camping would be a great idea. Put it out a few days before you get to the lake...then hit it!
What are some bait ideas that are longer lasting? Does anyone know how long the bait would last in a burlap sack?
I use the same fish food we use in the ponds for catfish, bluegill, bass, and wipers. It's the Purina Game Fish Food which has a scent attractant that game fish love. We mostly use it because it's what we have and know game fish love as well as bait fish. I only use a fist size for each new spot and it has proven it works right away for bait fish and crappie. It helps while the algae is starting.

Would the 5 gal. Bucket of dogfood work by itself or do you need the structure to go with it? Thought I might try dropping one in my boat slip.
I think that you wouldn't hold any big fish because of the way they relate to structure. You might get a few fish moving through feeding on the bait fish that your dog food will attract but without something for the big fish to hide in as a ambush point you won't see a lot of reward.
Put a block on a tree or two and tie them half way down the water column and use your dog food.

WOULD IT LAST A FEW DAYS, A WEEK, A COUPLE OF WEEKS?? I GUESS WHAT I AM SAYING IS IF I PUT A 5 GALLON BUCKET IN THE WEEKEND WOULD IT STILL BE HIGHLY PRODUCTIVE THE NEXT WEEKEND? OR WOULD IT WORK BETTER IF IT WAS PUT IN A COUPLE OF DAYS EARLY? LIKE WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY BEFORE FISHING ON SATURDAY?Quote:
