I'm new at this part of fishing but I've become addicted to building brush piles.I mostly use the bamboo in buckets like I learned from this forum and I'm curious about how long I should wait to fish them.I've been dropping a few every weekend and with my step daughter advice we tied shimp to them before sinking the trees to help speed things up.Will it hurt anything to go ahead and try a few of these new brush piles out?

I'll be at Hyco this Sat. so tell me where they are and I will let you know if you should fish them or give them more time.![]()
I would say you could start anytime. Just depends where they are and time of year but they usually start holding fish pretty quick if in right area.

It depends on the location and time of the year, but I've caught fish off beds that I had placed just a few days earlier. One big long trimmed cedar we placed at the mouth of a cove in early March produced 11 or 12 fish the following weekend and 2 limits the next weekend. The plastic beds I place may have a few on them in a few days , but hold more fish once they get a good growth of algea going. I'm just now starting to fish some of the deeper beds I placed this Summer and have a bunch of shallow beds that I may not hit till Spring.
This is my own experience: In mid March our group, the "Friends of CJ Brown Reservoir" were doing our 1st large drop of 40 "C" trees in 8- 15 fow on #10 the group furthest away . Terry Judy, our fearless and quite capable "bombadier" for the escapade loaded the 1st 8, and departed to the drop site, and made 2 passes on it to read the bottom before "splashing" them. Keep in mind he ALWAYS has his fish alarm mode "On". Hears 2 faint "beeps". Comes back, we "reload" the boat, and off he goes. Once again our fearless fish attractor placer makes an orientation pass to align his "bomb run" when LO and BEHOLD! He said the fish alarm started going off almost constantly ! The "C" trees weren`t in but 40 MINUTES AND WERE HOLDING FISH ! IN MID MARCH! He made another pass, accurately "splashed that 8 and came back again. Once loaded, he said "My back`s hurting. Lowell, come on along, I`ll navigate, you drop them". OK by me, so off we go. He slows down, aligns us up, suddenly starts laughing like he`s lost his mind and says "Do you hear that?" I`m REALLY thinking he`s gone "around the corner a little fast on 2 wheels" when it suddenly began. That fish alarm honest to high heaven sounded like an alarm clock gone disfunctional and seriously awry; it wouldn`t SHUT UP until we were well clear. "HURRAY!" yells I, "We`ve hit the MOTHERLODE!" He`s laughing so hard the boat`s going the wrong way. He then proceeded to tell me about his 1st 2 passes before dropping ANYTHING. I was STUNNED. We made it a point to have everyone present go out and "splash" a load with him. They ALL became "believers"...BTW, that spot was recently redone with PVC also added and is a GOOD walleye and crappie and yellow perch spot in early spring and late fall. Point is it happens FAR faster than you might think...
It's going to be Sunday now since I was informed today of a birthday party for a family member I must attend.
