Will the needles come off fast under the water or left to dry in the air? What would be the time frame for either?

They usually take a couple of years to come off either way. Fresh evergreens deter fish, I've heard as well. Contrary to popular belief, christmas trees dont make the best structure, because they deteriorate pretty fast, and are pretty hangy with hooks. PVC on the other hand works great, if you can find some scrap. Just make little artificial trees out of the pvc and you'll be in business for many years.

Depends on the type of tree. Scottish pines lose their`s in about 8- 10 months in fertile water, longer in say a gravel pit (infertile waters). And yes they are "snaggy' they also provide much better denser cover for some fry and most juvenille fish plus are much more biologically diverse than PVC since they are "biodegradable". Consider them slow release food capsules; used WITH PVC that is set deeper you get the BEST of both...
