anyone grow their own bamboo??

been ponderin bout plantin some boo. just wonderin how invasive this stuff is. i have 5 acres of wooded land and would plant in back where it stays moist. will this stuff spread rapidly in shaded areas? will it grow good under full shade of hardwoods? worth the trouble?

any help appreciated.

i tryed to plant some cane at mom and dad place one year in the back pasture and the deer got to them and so they didnt take the first time and so the second time i planted some i took some old tires and placed around them (2-3 tires high) and that gave them enough protection from the criters to get em going and then they just take off and the stuff down at mom and dads just about doubled the first year

My brother had a neighbor who planted some on there border fence line, and now the stuff is 30+ feet tall, and about 2-3" thick at the bottom and is all up against his house. He needs a chain saw to cut it. NO what he needs is a bull dozer to get rid of it. Anybody needs some for condo's come and get it! Bring your own chainsaw. He is in Madison, TN. Pm me if you want his phone number. He'll be glad to have help getting it cut.

You can grow your own cane and control the spreading 3 ways.

The best method is to dig a good sized hole and line it with rubber pond liner like they sell at Home Depot, then fill it back in with the dirt and plant your cane.

The second option is to keep a 50' perimeter mowed regularly around your cane.

You can also buy a "clumping" cane that doesn't spread very quickly, but it doesn't grow very tall either.

I've cut cane with about everything including chain saws, but the absolute best I've ever tried are the gasoline powered hedge trimmers.

Grows on the side of the road here as well. Once you learn to recognize what it looks like, you'll see it all over the place.

I cut mine with tree limb loppers, takes a bit of elbow grease but it's good exercise.

I cut at least 2 loads like this every year from a plot I have access to and I lose ground to the ne growth every year. Many of these are 3" in base diameter and each one I cut makes 2 18' pieces without having to trim the limbs. I just burn the tops.
After seeing how fast it takes over I would never plant any.
