    Default Boiled Bluegill

Has anybody ever tried boiled bluegill? A former neighbor that I see from time to time tells me that they are top notch if you like boiled shrimp. Here's what I found online. I would add a crab and shrimp boil seasoning pack and some Old Bay but this looks easy enough.

    Bluegill Cocktails

Dont have any shrimp ...try this EXTREMELY EASY recipe

    6 to 8 Bluegill
    Cocktail Sauce

Place whole bluegill in boiling water for exactly 6
minutes. Allow 1 or 2 small fish per serving.

Remove from water, and, with a fork, peel the white
meat from the bone. Salt to taste. Chill thoroughly, and
serve in cocktail glasses with your favorite shrimp
    cocktail sauce. Better than shrimp.

They really do taste like shrimp. But I do it a little different. I scale the Bluegill and then fillet and boil them. Then just let people pick their own meat off of a bone free fillet. A little work but beats the cost of shrimp.

Add a good amount of SEA SALT to the water and they do taste like shrimp. We have done it with yellow perch and crappie. But have to say that the Bluegill or Bream are the best of the lot.

Just about 2 minutes...of course that depends on how many fillets you dump in the pot. You can do it with the fillets frozen, just like you do shrimp but I have always done it with them thawed. A retired Army cook of 25 years showed me this and when he told me about it I thought he was nuts...LOL. It is a little work but last I checked shrimp is pretty high at the store.

I have done it with a vegetable steamer, steam until the fillets start to flake and pull them out and pop in the freezer to chill then dip them in melted butter yum yum. My grandmother would call them poor mans shrimp :D
