river anchor

What do you guys use? I fish white and arkansas river lost my anchor today.

Don't know how big your boat is but I use 2 - 20 lb coated river anchors. I fish the Arkansas River in Oklahoma and they hold better than any I've tried even in a stiff current. They are inexpensive to. I have tried about all styles and these work best for me.

18 ft flat bottom do you have trouble with them hanging up?

The only time I've hung them up was in a drift and it was my fault. Got to close to the drift. I mainly anchor in soft bottom areas above drifts. They are great in soft bottoms. I also use them a lot rip rap and rocks and they worked well. The big key is letting enough rope out so they lay on their side and can bite.

I did look and you can get the coated 20 lber's online through Walmart for 24.00. There are some very high dollar anchor's out there but if you do loose one of these it won't be a big money loss. The rubber coating is nice because you don't scratch up your boat. 20 lber's would be plenty for your 18 footer. You will have several different opinions kinda like asking about trolling motors or fish locators etc. These work well for me.

Here is like what we have been using for 40 years on the Wabash & White Rivers. 14 & 16 foot jon boats hold great with them. We have a local blacksmith buddy throw them together with left over stock.

I like the rubber coated river anchors too.Nothing wrong with whatever you want to fab to whatever works for you. I like them because they are fairly inexpensive and they don't take up much space.And you can pick one up at a lot of places.Also....they are really good for anchoring on say a lake without always having to use a lot of line.

When I fished a lot in the dam tailraces and places on the Mississippi,Ohio river and such that were full of snag hazards...especially old cable and ropes and nets and things like that....we always used something cheap because you are going to lose some.An old section of train rail or other scrap heavy metal was always popular around here.Something you could get for next to nothing. We have even been known to just use a rock off the rip rap banks.If the bottom has a lot of old heavy fishing line and ropes,old trot lines,sections of old trammel or gill nets, barge lines,cables...etc. there's no such thing as an anchor that is always retrievable.
