Hello from Olympia, WA. I am new to fishing period. I have been fishing for trout and pan fish for the last couple months. I have been using a cheap 5 foot something zebco rod and a plastic spincast reel, a zebco dock demon and a 20year old 6'6 Falcon Medium Heavy with the tip broke off. No boat, shorebound.

So went a couple days ago and bought some gear to cast 1/8 & 1/16oz jigs and lures. Got a BPS Microlite 7'6" Ultralight/ Fast Action rod, a pflueger president 6925 reel and spooled up 110yads of 4lb mono.

I go out and unfortunately it does not cast a 1/8oz lure very far. It does cast a 1/4 Oz lure beautifully.

My question is should I have gotten a light rod instead of an ultralight? For still fishing with powerbait and a slip sinker or under a bobber the other ragedy setups I use work just fine. I was hoping to be able to cast the smaller lures and jigs a little bit farther. I am not that good with distances but I don't think I got the 1/8 Oz lure farther than 30 or 40 feet. I can tell you this much, not even close to as far as I see other guys casting lures and such.
