Making believe a lure is irreplaceable ignores the facts
Ever lose a lure that's caught a gazillion fish that is not longer available or that you've forgotten the specifics of such as exact size and color? Once upon a time I was convinced such lures existed - especially if a fellow angler did really well on one. If I couldn't purchase the lure I thought, 'oh well, I'll have to find another that works as well'. Even when I make and use my own lures and lose one that produced and then lose it, I rack my brain trying to remember the specifics of the lure so that I can make more. (Good thing I take digital pictures of the lure in fish's mouths.)
But as most experience anglers know from many experiences using many lure designs in many colors and sizes, there are no magic baits. When it comes to soft plastics, there are many different slight changes that can be made to most good lures that work - none better than the any other. Take these surface lures for example I caught bass on when nothing else was working:

I caught fish immediately using the top lure, then decided to try the third and then fourth one down. Bass clobbered all of them. The old me might have decided that the first lure in that color with that tail the most likely to catch fish. If I lost the lure to a pickerel and hadn't taken a picture, what a lose I would have felt as if that was the only lure capable of catching fish. But as you can see from the variety of worms and other topwater plastics, there ain't no such thing:

Even when it comes to grubs, all of these caught fish on the same day:

Most important about using these lures was remembering the hook sizes and maybe jig weights that contributed to their success. Again - good thing I take pictures and store them on-line.
So, the moral of the story : lures that work for certain presentations are many, color the least important factor, (but only as long as I own 50 of the same bait! LOL)
