Default Question For Jerry Blake/Darrel Morris & Others (Electronics)

Jerry/Darrel, what is the fish finder and GPS that you use on your boat. I know that the Humminbird has to be "GPS Ready" to have a seperate hand held GPS unit.

Has anyone tried the combo units? I was looking at the 580c, and it looks like it has everything that I need.

I am looking to upgrade for Fathers Day!:D

I use a Garmin Map76Cx for getting back to my condos. I have a 12-volt adapter permanently plugged into a 12-volt receptacle (came with an electric knife) under my front deck and I have a Marine Mount to hold the GPS.

I use a Humminbird 797c2 SI with a shoot-through the hull transducer mounted near the front of the boat and angled slightly toward the side we fish on. I also have an SI transducer mounted on my trolling motor and a Y-cable so the downward sonar uses the shoot-through the hull transducer and not the SI transducer. The Garmin and the Humminbird are not connected.

I also have a Lowrance LCX27c mounted on my console on a swivel so I can turn it towards the front when crappie fishing. It's transducer is mounted on the transom, also on the side we fish on. It has a pretty good "Enhanced Lake Map" for Lake Greeson (a free download) that comes in real handy when looking for points, drop-offs, creek channel bends and other structures we want to put cover on or troll over.

Everything Jerry said plus I think you will prefer a separate handheld like the 76 over using the gps on the sonar unit itself. One, the handhelds seem to be more accurate and two, you don't want to use up some of your sonar screen space with gps when viewing sonar. Toggling the screens is a pain and I want to see both at the same time all the time.

    Default Jerry or Darryl

Jerry, which Lowrance did you have when Texas Jimmy & I were out there???.It was not color but had great definition...Does the 27 do as good a job as far as seeing fish in a brushpile as your old unit...And, can you see the color with sunglasses?

    Thanks & good fishing

    Hi Jerry

Expand more on the 27c. Is it basic or do you have "all the stuff"? Skip seems to like it.

I am looking at it for the front of the boat. I like the big screen and I like Lowrance stuff. I believe the underwater definition is better than that of Humminbird.

    Hi Darryl,

I agree about the separate hand held unit.

    Hey Don:

I was using an LCX17M when y'all were here. The 27c is basically the same unit except in color. I wasn't real happy with the picture at first but when switched to "Ice View" it looks very much like the HB 797. I don't have any trouble seeing either unit with Polarized sunglasses.

Now that I've been using color graphs it would be real hard to go back to gray scale. Adjusting the sensitivity seems to be even more important on the color units though. Too much sensitivity and most everything is the same color.

    Hey Tom:

I just have the basic unit with remote antenna. I can't tell much difference in the definition between the two units but I don't use them the same way. They both have features I like that the other doesn't have. On the 797 I can use the Fish ID with the Fish ID sensitivity turned way down so I only get fish symbols and depth readings from larger fish and still see the actual sonar returns of the fish. On the Lowrance if I turn on the Fish ID it filters out all the sonar returns of the fish so I keep it turned off. I had an issue with the 797 - the deal with the grid line depths not being corrected with the Depth Offset, which may be fixed with latest software update. Since I installed a shoot-through-the-hull transducer for my downward looking sonar it's not a problem because the transducer is much closer to the surface. Rather than using an "Angled Puck" transducer I used a regular puck transducer and have it epoxied in the hull where there's about a 15-degree angle, which keeps the transducer shooting out where my front poles are. In fact, when I move the boat towards my front slip-float rigs so they are closer to the boat I can see the split shot on the line and I've even seen fish come up and take the bait or just come up and look at it.

The only other problem with the 797 is that I can't get a detailed map for Greeson and Lowrance has a free download for the 27c.
