    Default Barrow pit fishing (pics)

With the Mississippi river getting so high this year, it replenished a lot of the borrow pits inside the levee. It has been several years since some have had the river in it. I tried one that I haven't fished since I started crappie fishing, with a little success. The river is still in it, but will be out in the next day or two. Fixed up a 12 ft. boat for putting in these small lakes, that I can't get my bigger boat into. I fished Sat. and today, the crappie were'nt real big but the bream that hit the jig were huge.

    Saturday's catch.

    The borrow pit boat.

    Today's catch.

Had a lot of fun, but it's still tough loading and unloading the boat by myself, and a 4-wheel drive it a must.

Some nice fish Jerry, but that one on the left is a funny looking crappie. That one sure came out of the Mississippi River.:D

I'm from the hills, and I can remember when I was a kid and first started hearing about "bar" pits as it was pronounced. For years I wondered why they were called bar pits, and it was only after I grew up that I figured out they were shortening barrow pits. As they borrow dirt to build up something else, it was obvious, but I sure felt stupid. (Not for the first or last time.) Nice fish.
