Thread: This Spring

Has reinforced that I need to become better at winter/summer crappie fishing. I’ve had some very good outings but majorly of days I’ve been able to fish and planned time off I have been “weathered out”. Something to look forward to with retirement a few years away!

Crappie are a worthy adversary most of the time. We all deal with the weather for sure. Congrats on your retirement in a few years. I will be looking forward to mine in the future

I'm retired and I don't fish much in Spring due to the unpredictable weather. It was same as you when I worked, would plan vacation days to fish in Spring and end up sitting at home frustrated or go anyway and be frustrated fighting the weather about half of my off days.

Agreed , the Spring weather is tough.
This year has been extra windy.
I’ve still managed to catch some good fish lately spawning in shallow water. Nothing like the big male crappie chomping down on a jig under the cypress trees with only 2 feet of line out.
Waiting on the rain to pass as I type .
Rising water and falling barometer with a south wind. = time to go !

I retired in January. I was thinking I’d go fish at least 4 days a week. I’ve been lucky to fish 2 days a week. I’ll be glad to see summer!

Weather has been all over the place this spring

I can stand cold or hot weather, even a little rain but floods and wind just ruin a trip . Spring has to be my least favorite season to fish because of unstable weather . Right now we are having flooding and winds that never seems to cease . I remember years ago everyone that Crappie fished could not wait for the spawn . Were the weather conditions better or has it changed ?

Big rains ruin everything on the AR river near the main channel and its where I have always found the bigger fish, at least since the good ole days 6-8 years back where the back water and flats were so full of giants there was no question about where you were going to fish on any given day. Pushing, pulling and spider rigging never really gave the wind much thought from what a 1-2oz weight could fix, but now single poling and a scope and the wind is the achilles heel for me. If the wind shows 12 on the forecast, its gonna be 17-20 in some of the "nestled" lakes.

IMO, the best time to hit it and my favorite is Pre-spawn. Get out there when its in the 20's and 30's solid for a week or so and NO ONE is fishing or has been out there. Fish are going nuts and gorging on stunted and shocked bait fish. Thats the time I try and stack the freezer.

It will be like a light switch flipping and we will go from Spring to 90 degree weather and it will be solely hair jig time and maybe a minnow.

Big wind and very high river water is my only enemy. Although, the lakes and high water have been pretty dang good this year.
