I'm netting now to catch a mess of Flathead Catfish. I always catch lots of nice fat Buffalo. Would load someone up with these fish. All I ask is a small donation to help cover gas and tags. Last year a guy stopped by with a 20 dollar bill. He left with more fish than him and his dad wanted to dress.I could sell these fish if I wanted to dress them for .70 lb to a wholesaler. Too much work and would have to haul them. That's why they are such a bargin.:D I'll only dress a few for my self and friends. I love buffalo ribs for a change from Crappie and Catfish. They are really good during the winter while it's cold.

Man those buffalo ribs bring back some fond memories of eating some fine soul food when I was a teenager. A guy I went to High School with lived down at Scott and his mama could flat cook some soul food. We would fish all day and come in starved to death. She would have some buffalo ribs, greens and ham and some saltwater cornbread. Man those were some of the finest meals of my life.
Going to have to take a rain check on them this time arround but thanks for bringing back that fond memory. Well got to go, my wife has some tuna helper crap ready for dinner.
buffalo ribs are hard to beat. we used to net them alot on the old river, but now our caretaker of our island is a commercial fisherman and we get it anytime we go over there. to be honest it is my favorite fish to eat
You mean this buffalo? These smallmouth buffs start spawning in the spring and I've seen several three times this size in shallow water looking like a salmon run.

That one looks skinny compared to ours in Nimrod lake. That looks more like a river fish ,they are usually slimmer in rivers.:D

When I was a kid my grandfather, dad and I would go snagging in the spring when these fish called "red horse" and "black horse" were running up the streams. I havent heard of them in years now and wonder if we were catching a drum or buffalo of some kind? My grandmother would get them and gut em and cut em into steaks then pressure cook em. They were great prepared like a salmon crocet.
Has anyone else heard of a Red horse or black horse?
This one was a male, probably why it's skinnier. I've seen two different kinds in the Tennessee River. These which are smallmouth buffs, dark grey with black fins, and a brown one, which is much bigger. I've seen some nearly big around as a 5 gallon bucket and go 50 pounds with scales big as quarters.Originally Posted by NIMROD
There is a fish in the TN River called a silver redhorse. We actually have a state record for it, around 17lbs I think. It's some sort of a big sucker fish similar to buffalo but the buffs are more carp like. The pictures I've seen of redhorse are more like a typical slim bodied sucker fish you seen in rivers.Originally Posted by gooch
