Lake Greeson Crappie

I think the water just got a bit too warm and that pushed them back off the banks. The coolest surface temperature I found yesterday was 69 degrees and that's too warm for them to spawn. This cool-down we're getting though will get them going in the shallows again.

None of the females we caught yesterday were any where near laid out so there is plenty of spawning yet to be done as long as the weather cooperates, which it looks like it is going to. Most of the fish we caught yesterday were 6 to 10-feet deep on staging beds close to spawning areas:

How did you manage to catch so many? The Lake had white caps and the wind was blowig at 40mph. WE caught 5 but had to fight to catch them. Do you give lessons? :confused:

I would like to know if this haul is from a 1/2 day trip or a full day. My complement on the hawgs.

Hey Charlie:

We did fight the wind early but we have condos placed in protected areas for any wind direction. The last bunch we put in (22 bucket/bamboo condos) were placed specifically for winds from the west, southwest and south and we fished those after the wind got up.

Had a pretty stiff northeast wind today so we had to fish some other areas to get a break from it.

I give lessons every day!! :)

Hey Randy:

That was a full-day trip - about 7:00am to 3:30pm. My clients caught all of the fish too. I usually catch a few but didn't get a bite on a jig early so I put it up.

Dang guys, Greeson looks vey healthy! What are you puttin in the water to make them bloat up like that? Our weather turned very cold and has knoked the surface temps back into the 50's... ouch. But like you said Jerry there is a lot more spawn ahead!

Hey Jerry, It's pretty neat that I noticed that your fishing on Greeson is so close to what we're doing here on Nimrod. Surface temp on main lake 69 degrees or a little higher. Water warmed to quickly to catch many in the shallows. Bank waders are very disappointed. I waded a couple times and only caught some nice males wading out towards the open water and then casting cork and jig out even further.
I disagree with a lot of fishermen here that the crappie have already spawned out. All the females that I am catching on the creek and river channel edges are bulging with eggs. The eggs are still a dark yellow to a light orange color and still pretty clumped together.
The last few days that I fished the fish had seemed to migrate closer to the spawning areas and left my shallow 10 foot beds. Maybe this cold weather will give me another crack at those big females.
I have definately got to work on getting some structure in for windy days also.

good looking mess you had there nova. I cant wait to come down for CC. the fishing will be great but the meeting the people and eating will be the best part.

Hey jerry what happend to the 2 spawn the fishing has got super hard down on greeson i have been out a cople of time in the past week and could only get a few keepers. I looked at your web page to day and it looks like you had a hard day only 11 keepers was that an all day trip or just the after noon. I read a thing on the net that said if fish missed a spawn thay would set and take in there eggs and not bite for weeks is that what is happen.
