Went to Lake Maumelle Saturday morning to try the "dead sea" for the first time this year. Fog was the worst I have ever seen in my life. It was not that bad untill I got on the water but unfortunately it got so bad then that you could barely make out the bank and tree line from 50 yards away. Got kinda scary when the idiot green carp tourney started and they came flying down the lake with there gps units in hand. Was planning on meeting Helmslaw and CEB but the fog got so bad I couldnt get back to the launch to meet Helms, or find CEB out on the lake. We both were on the water by 6:30 and fished till 9:30 within a half mile of each other before we were able to meet up. Had a group of canadian geese fly over me and I called his cell phone to see if he could hear them. Turns out they were just about to fly by him so we knew we were close. We then played a little Marko Polo untill he appeared thru the mist with a dazed and confused look on his face. That big water and fog kinda messes with a flatlander from West Memphis used to fishing Horseshoe and Midway.
We fished another hour or so then within a minutes time the fog just vanished. It was one of the most remarkable things I have ever seen. Ended up catching a few dinks and marking some brush and underwater humps for later terrible trips to Lake Maumelle.
Here are some pics of CEB in the fog and some after it cleared.

A bad day of fishing
beats a good day at work.

I see CEB figured out how to get those rod tubes installed. Looks good.

CATCH A BIG-UN
You should have seen me waiting at the boat ramp. I looked like a kid that had lost his dog and was waiting on his dad to come to the boat dock to take him fishing but his dad never showed up. I had people asking me if they could help me or if I wanted to get in their boat and go fishing but I told them no, I was waiting on my two new fishing friends and they woud be to get me in a little bit. Even had one of those green carp tournament guys offer to let me sit on a bucket in the middle his boat.
Just kidding. That fog was as thick as I have ever seen it anywhere, anytime. We will hook up soon Gooch and CEB.
Ceb, what kinda fishin you doing with those rods standing straight up? I guess you are looking for a new challenge.. :D
Like I said I sure felt bad about you comming out there for nothing but that fog got bad quick. Even if I had a gps it would have been bad scary with those green carp fishermen running and gunninng everywere.
I have never seen anything like it. Even after 9:00 the and the sun was getting on up in the sky the fog was so thick your visibility was less than 100 yds.
Lets see if we can get it right Saturday night. No way we can get lost on the Little Maumelle no matter how bad the fog gets.Originally Posted by Helmslaw
Hey those things look great and work better. Think he has some leftovers I'm going to use and do the same.
I noticed with CEB's poles that they did have some pretty good movement at the base. So I wondered if you do anything to make your rods fit tighter in the base? Or is that evan issue with your size rods?Originally Posted by slabbandit
Man those pics look wicked. That's the worst fog I've ever witnessed.
Hey Bobberwatcher, that lake was killin' me with the spider rig. I would go from 20' of water into 10' of water within a split second. I spent the whole time changing lengths of line on the poles because I couldn't get oriented and I couldn't throw out a marker bouy (saw no fish on depthfinder). I finally just gave it up and went crusing with the trolling motor looking for The Goocher...
Hey slabbandit, thanks for the pics that you posted. They were really useful when making mine. I took my time with it, and it turned out great. I'll post some close up pics of the vertical rod tubes later.Originally Posted by slabbandit
My Buck's Graphite Jig poles just happen to fit in the 1 1/4 inside dia. pvc just perfectly. Also my straight cork handled spinning rods fit well also. I didn't do anything special other than check around for the perfect size PVC to fit my poles.
