    What part of the state?

During the winter I think the Arkansas River would be your best bet. If I am not mistaken, Peckerwood is closed during that time frame.

I live in Dewitt. I mostly have to travel 2 hours or so to fish in the winter. I do travel though. Peckerwood is closed during the hunting season. Always have the river......But for whatever reason I have never had much luck on the river down here like they start doing about the pine bluff pool. Seems the further north you go on the Arkansas River for crappie, the better it gets. Now the catfish down here I stay on all winter long! The river down here is the best stretch on the Arkansas river for catfishing in my opinion. I am not sure what is different on the crappie......but I and many others have noticed this.
