The Capps and Coleman Widowmakers are primarily for the hardcore dedicated spider-rigger and I think they can be called the "gold standard" in that respect. They can also be used for power trolling and longlining in front but I would not recommend them for pulling cranks.....get a set of black widows for that or do like we do and mount some "fish-on" holders on the rails in back. Our C&C's are set so that they don't have to be readjusted most of the time after taking a rod out but occasionally we will put enough pressure on it to require a readjustment....that is not a problem and takes less than 5 seconds. Our rodholders stay put wherever we move them and setting the rodtip the correct distance off the water is not a problem.....we do it automatically without thinking when we put the rod back into the holder. Adjustments are infinite and literally smooth as glass with these holders and take mere seconds. We have even pulled the rodholders back far enough to keep the jigs out of the water and put the boat on plane in order to move short distances on a fairly calm day and have not had a problem doing that. Meatgetter can show you the trick welds that make these holders the best out there. FYI, The holders shown in the pics have screw-in bases and I have always been leery of them from buying a set like that ten years ago. They had a tendency to "unscrew" on one side of the boat in anything more than a moderate wind and were a constant nightmare. Also, I am not saying the C&C's absolutely CAN'T be used for cranks, I just know that we would have to tighten up the ball considerably from the way we have them set if we were to do that but I think it would certainly be possible in a pinch. If I did pull cranks off the front a whole lot I would probably use a different setup. I hope this makes sense and doesn't sound confusing.....
