It could be. I have seen a handful that I suspected were black and white crosses. The only way to be 100% sure is to have a genetic sample analyzed. What lake?

OK, I don't mind showing my ignorance.

I've read this for years..........and yet, when I catch any crappie, they ALL have a whole lot more 'splines' than 7 or 8. Mostly about 11 to 15!!! It's pretty clear a spline ain't what I think it is.

    Help??????

Spines are the hard dorsal rays. There are also soft dorsal rays located behind the hard spines. You only count the hard dorsal spines to determine if it is a black or white crappie.
