Goblerblaster , All I use is jigs and usually the fish will bite them very well. Can't beat Southern Pro or MEATGETTER Jigs. I know several minnow farmers and they usually sell 6 lb minumum . I believe the # is aprox # of lbs per thousand minnows. You get 8 lbs of 8's you should have close to 1000. I don't use minnows but if I did , I'd have to buy a big load every month. The bait you get should be the same from store to store buying by the pound. Would be willing to bet most if not all bait shops in this area get their minnows from Burk's which delivers to this area.
Princes store years ago before I quit minnows would hold the minnow dipper under the water so the hollow ring would fill with water and you was buying by weight ! The water poured into your bucket along with minnows on scales. Maybe you need to watch the folks weigh your bait or tell them you will not buy any . Remind them word travels fast if they try to cheat you . :twocents Pay attention to who fills your order of bait. Some stores have several people that work and not all dole out same bait or even know what they are doing. A friend of mine uses minnows went to the local baitshop. He got a bunch one time and next trip someone else dipped minnows , they got exactly 12 minnows in a dozen. :dono
I use minnows every trip. I can get the 6 I need for about $1.50 around here. I usually put the 4 or 5 I have left in a big styrofoam cooler and they keep for a long time.
Nimrod, I know you don't use minnows. I just was messin with you. How is the water this morning down there? High and muddy I suppose....
I buy mine in Bald Knob on the way back from work and I keep them in an old 100 quart cooler with a high powered aquarium bubbler in it. I try to keep around 3 pounds this time of year since there is not a good place to buy them between my house and Conway. I think they are around $7 a pound in Bald Knob.
Another place I'll never buy again is Whiskers in Perryville. Toad Suck and Bates have always been fair.
I have a Weston minnow vat.......don't know gallons, I'd say about 30 (?). Cabela's used to sell them, made in Oregon. No longer available anywhere. The aerator that came with it burned out, and now I just use two plain old bucket aerators, frabills I think. It had something similar to these:
Agitators
but burned up. I can't find enough dollars to get one of these expensive ones......... I can keep minnows between trips fine, UNLESS it's hot summer time.....nothing saves 'em then it seems.
I am determined to learn to fish jigs only before I die. But I am convinced minnows are the 'training wheels' of crappie fishing. I ain't learned to ride that bike alone yet, so I need a few training wheels. Being in a boat without 'em makes me danged nervous!!! But it's clear how the pros do it, and one day I swear I'm gonna learn how and break the habit. Till then.......................
Somebody charge me 10.95 for 46 minnows, and they'd have my Last dollar of business!!!!!!! PERIOD.
After tax, that's over 26.5 cents EACH!!!
