I know this is a dumb question, but I have always either fished with just a minnow on a hook, or a plain jig with tube or maribou.
If you "tip a jig" with a minnow, are you just using the jig head with a minnow, or are you putting the minnow on with the tube or maribou?
Also, do you hook from the back or the lip when "tipping"?

thanks, never entered my mind to do that till I kept reading on here about tipping. do you always tip the jig, or just sometimes? what causes you to tip if you only do it under certain conditions?
ibmack, the only dumb question is the one you didn't ask!! Folks might laugh with ya, but if ya don't know, ya don't know and ya got to ask to find out!!
thanks, gonna head out to little Maumelle River in a few minutes and see if I can catch one with a tipped jig. be my first try ever, hehe.
I always start out with straight jigs when I vertical jig, except when they are on the beds, then I dont launch my boat without em. Tipping with a minnow helps when the fish are high pressured and finicky, or just wanting a larger profile bait. Same principle when spiderrigging. Bottom line, if what you are doing isnt working, try something else. Tipping with a minnow is a valuable weapon to keep in your arsenal.

I use minners all the time, with a jig, Minner Critter, or on s bare hook.
I hate minners, and I kill as many as I can.![]()
We only sell the Best. Ranger, Xpress, Yamaha, Suzuki, Tohatsu.
I use all 3 methods, 4 if you count a straight jig but most of the time I use a minner in some fashion. Thanks to a tip here on the site, last year I started usinga straight colored jighead (no body) tipped with minnow which works very well. Butthere are times when they want nothing but a minnow on a bare hook. That’s whyI almost always have em! Like Chris said, if it ain’t working try somethingdifferent. Oh, and I have found that you’ll catch more bass by incorporating jigheads….bonus!
